- In Person – Bring the completed title, proof of residency, and payment to one of our locations.
The drive-thru windows in Gallatin and Hendersonville process basic MVD renewals only.
If you are applying for a title or updating your expiration date, the transaction must be completed inside the office. - By Mail – Mail the title and fees to the address below. The back of the title must be fully completed.
Both the seller and all buyers must sign and print their names on the back of the Tennessee title. The sale date,
sales price, and odometer reading (for vehicles 2011 and newer) must also be included.

- Power of Attorney (POA) Form
- Proof of residency is required. A Tennessee driver’s license showing your Sumner County address will serve as both
primary proof of identity and residency. The name, address, and signature on the driver’s license must match the
buyer’s information on the title. - If the address on the title and driver’s license are different, you will need to provide two secondary proofs of residence. See
examples on TN.gov - If the vehicle is being obtained from a direct family member or the sales price is less than 75% of the vehicle’s value, both the seller and purchaser must complete the Non-Dealer Transfer Affidavit.
- Which style of the new plate do you want?
Fees
- Regular plate and title: $95.00
- Transfer a plate and title: $18.50. The transferred plate must be unexpired and registered in the same name as the buyer.
- Application for title only: $14.00
- Lien fee: $11.00
- License plate postage: $7.00
- Replacement title: $14.00, plus $2.00 if processed by mail
- Card payments include a 2.25% + $0.25 fee
- Sales tax may apply. Calculate Sales Tax
- Checks should be made payable to: Sumner County Clerk.
Additional Information
- State of Tennessee Vehicle Services
- If a vehicle is purchased from a Tennessee dealer, sales tax is paid to the dealer. Otherwise, sales tax is paid to the County Clerk’s office.
